This is a natural untreated Herkimer diamond set in a modern silver pendant.

THIS HERKIMER DIAMOND IS A DOUBLE TERMINATED QUARTZ CRYSTAL.THE FIRST MINERS TO DISCOVER IT BELIEVED THEM TO BE DIAMONDS BECAUSE OF THE CLEARNESS AND CLARITY OF THE STONE.THEY ARE COMPOSED OF SILICON DIOXIDE AND FOUND IN NEW YORK STATE USA AND WERE FORMED BY TREMDOUS HEAT APPROX. 400 MILLION YEARS AGO. SPECIMENS FROM THIS AREA MAY CONTAIN ANTHANALITE INCLUSIONS. THEY ARE NAMED AFTER A GENERAL NICHOLAS HERKIMER. IT IS THE SMALLER STONES BELOW 10 CARTAS THAT ARE SUITABLE FOR JEWELLERY AS THEY HAVE THE BEST CLARITY. RARE STONES WITH A LIQUID BUBBLE ARE CALLED ENHYDROS. THOSE THAT ARE LARGER WITH INCLUSIONS ARE USED AS SPECIMENS OR FOR MEDITATION.
