In Australia, Emerald were first mined in 1890 in New South
Wales, in a town called Emmaville.
Emerald mines were found in Egypt, Rome, Zambia,
Afghanistan, Austria, Bulgarian, Ethiopia, France, Canada, Chins, Germany,
India, Madagascar, Mozambique, Kazakhstan, Namibia, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan,
Russia, Tanzania, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, the United States and
Colombia. Colombia is the largest producer in the world for Emeralds.
The Emerald that commands high prices are the ones with no
visible inclusions, or considerably flawless. Stones that are “eye clean” and
has vivid primary hues of green are highly priced.
Emeralds that are faceted are cut in oval shape. The
signature cut for an Emerald is rectangular
with facets around the top edge of the rock.
To improve the clarity and stability of the rock before
cutting, they are oiled with Cedar oil.
The oil treatment is accepted if it’s been disclosed.
Emeralds have different hues such as blue green, yellow
green with green the predominant colour.
Emeralds are graded like any other gemstones with the four
Cs, colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. Colour is the most import of the
four Cs.
